"Life doesn't stop just because you have an illness. But the emotional impact that comes with it can block treatment, or even endanger the patient's condition. We had a man in his forties with pancreatic cancer, who was informed that he would need to be fed by a tube placed in his stomach. At first, we got him eating solid food again and he proudly said, 'I'm not going home on artificial nutrition.' But after the second surgery, we realized his stomach couldn't support a normal diet. He had to give up solid food or he would have no chance of survival. Life without food was very difficult for him to consider. I helped him to weigh his options and consider what is most important. Finally, he agreed to the recommended treatment, and was able to go home to be with his family."
