"A 24-year-old male was found unresponsive in a car in the winter. He had been there for over ten hours at temperatures below zero. Hypothermic and frozen, he had almost no blood pressure or neurological activity; but we knew he was too young to die. We gave him medication to increase the oxygen in his lungs and for five days did everything possible to maintain his vitals. I kept calling to him, 'Wake up! Your family is here waiting for you.' When he finally became conscious, he remembered my pleas. The patient later walked out of the hospital unassisted, and then came back to shake my hand."
